Module 03
Ultraviolet & Infrared Laboratory
Light beyond what your eyes can see. Each panel is a small interactive demonstration.
Ultraviolet
10 – 400 nm- Passes: quartz · Blocked by: glass
- Effects: fluorescence, strong photographic action, ionisation
- Uses: sterilisation, detecting fake notes / gems / ghee, vitamin D production
⚠ Long exposure can cause skin cancer and eye damage.
Infrared
700 nm – 1 mm- Passes: rock-salt · Absorbed by: glass
- Effects: heating, detectable by thermopile
- Uses: remote controls, fog/night photography, therapy, military signalling
IR has long wavelength → scattered less (I ∝ 1/λ⁴) → penetrates fog and atmosphere well.
